ITIL®  Software Scheme Announcement

14th January, 2011, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK

Amrita Ghattaora, IPR Co-ordinator, APM Group - The Accreditor, has issued the following statement regarding the Mandatory Assessment Criteria for the ITIL® Software Scheme.

"Following the publication of the Mandatory Assessment Criteria for the ITIL® Software Scheme assessment process, further queries from the Vendor community have arisen regarding the impact of introducing 100% compliance areas into the scheme. The purpose of this statement is to clarify how this is used and to allay any concerns.

The decision to publish the scheme criteria was taken to improve the transparency of the scheme details and to clarify the process of endorsing a software tool.

Following the publication of the criteria, it was agreed by the ITIL Software Scheme Change Advisory Board, that compliance to certain areas of ITIL must be mandatory. This strengthens the certainty of process compliant tools meeting the requirements that must specifically follow certain areas of ITIL guidance.

There has also been concern that requiring a software tool to meet 100% of these criteria will not be possible. Some vendors have asked for further clarification of this mandated compliance element of the scheme.

Every tool that is assessed is reviewed by an experienced assessor working to the published Mandatory Assessment Criteria. As always, the scheme requires that a tool aligns with all the criteria relevant for a particular process. The criteria does not stifle innovation or a vendor's opportunity to interpret how ITIL addresses a particular process. The criteria is consistent with one of the ITIL core precepts of adapt and apply. This makes it is possible for a tool to be submitted for assessment. The vendor is also able to use a degree of variation in its approach or terminology from that of the ITIL guidance when dealing with a particular stage within a process.

We are confident that the use of mandatory criteria strengthens the validity of the ITIL Software Scheme, while preserving the ability for products to be innovative, different from one another in their design and still be ITIL process compliant."
