The UK government recognised very early on the significance of best practice and created initiatives to identify efficient, successful and reliable approaches to various management disciplines. The Cabinet Office, part of Her Majesty's Government (HMG), has played a vital role in developing methodologies, processes and frameworks, and establishing these as best practice. These include ITIL, which is now the most widely accepted approach to service management in the world, PRINCE2, a world leading project management methodology, Managing Successful Programmes (MSP), Management of Risk (M_o_R), Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices (P3O), Management of Portfolios (MoP), Management of Value (MoV) and the Portfolio, Programme, and Project Management Maturity Model (P3M3).
To support its Best Practice guidance, the Cabinet Office created an innovative and successful arrangement with TSO (as official publisher) and APM Group (as official accreditor). This provides Best Practice users with high quality publications, training, qualification schemes and consultancy services.
